Gerhard Eckel & Alexander Gottfarb

AT/SE

workshop

In cooperation with DER BETRIEB

Gerhard works as professor of Computer Music and Multimedia at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Beside his teaching duties he uses sound to explore unconventional ways of shaping new worlds. He aims at articulating aesthetic and epistemic forms of listening, engaging all senses and not only audition.

Alexander Gottfarb is a Swedish dancer and choreographer living in Vienna. His own creations focus on repetition, transformation and duration.

During this workshop they will introduce us to their work on ultra sound and bodily movements. After many years of exploring sound and movements with the help of infra-red cameras, Eckel has now constructed a device to estimate the amount of motion in a space, built out of ultra sound microphones. Together with Gottfarb they will demonstrate how this tool is constructed and show how the data collected from it can be processed and composed in relation to dance and other spatial changes of mass.

The workshop is open to all participants with curiosity in sound and movement. Participants are invited to bring their own sound producing devices, not necessarily classical instruments, but not excluding them.

This workshop will be held October 25th at DER BETRIEB – a former hairdresser salon in Vienna’s 15th district that has turned into a space for dance performances and performance art in 2022.
