Zavoloka mainly explores digital and analogue synthesis and combines it with her own recordings of Ukrainian ancient folk songs and instruments.
Zavoloka is the stage name of Kateryna Zavoloka – sound artist, composer, performer, sound and graphic designer from Kyiv, Ukraine, now based in Vienna, Austria.
Zavoloka collaborated with Kotra (UA), AGF (DE), Mark Clifford of Seefeel (UK), Feldermelder (CH) and was invited to support as special guest Aphex Twin’s (UK) audiovisual rave shows. She often works and performs with Laetitia Morais (PT) visual artist, and has taken part in many cross-genre art projects.
Together with Dmytro Fedorenko (Kotra) Kateryna Zavoloka runs the Ukrainian electronic music label KVITNU, whose releases’s graphic presentations are designed and supervised by Zavoloka herself. In 2011 Kvitnu was nominated in three categories at Qwartz Electronic Music Awards and awarded Best Music Label and Discovery.
In 2005 Zavoloka was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica in Digital Music & Sound Art for her album “Plavyna”.
Zavoloka performs regularly in various concert halls, clubs, contemporary art museums, theaters and open-air venues around the world as well as various international music festivals such as Présences Eléctronique (FR), CTM (DE), MadeiraDig (PT), Unsound New York (USA), Kvitnu Fest (UA), Flussi (IT), Detali Zvuku (UA), The Morning Line (AT), Skanu Mežs (LV), Rewire (NL) festival and many others.
